Who Will Take Care Of Me When I Get Old

My Need for Preparation for My Future Care
As I approach the latter stages of my life, it is increasingly worrying to think of who will care for me when I am no longer capable of taking care of myself. Sadly, the natural aging of the human body often leads to a gradual decline in physical and mental capability, leaving many elderly people in need of assistance.
Decrease in Quality of Care as We Age
Speaking from personal experience, I know that as we advance in years, the quality of care we receive often declines. From physicians to nurses, there is a distinct lack of respect generally displayed towards their aging patients. It has been so disappointing, to be treated as though I was not even a person regardless of my condition. I understand that the health care system has to take care of a large number of patients at once, but I still find it a cruel system at times.
Many of us grow up in a world where we are taught to respect our elders and value our people. Yet, it is a shame to see that this ethos often does not continue in the health care industry. As I grow older by the day, It is worrying to think of the seriousness of this situation and the worries it brings for my future.
Expectations From My Family
People often see their families as their biggest hope for following through with any kind of care. A welcoming gesture is often made by couples to offer their children to take responsibility for the elderly person. Yet, this plan comes with many associated risks. With that in mind, it is important to consider the health, financial and psychological burdens that can come with looking after the elderly.
Not only is the standard of care expected to be high, but it can feel like a heavy burden for somebody attempting to juggle a personal life and their work life as well. Not only this, but it can also cause resentment between the family members, as things as simple as providing meals and cooking can become a source of contention.
My Concerns for Special Care
Given my disability, I have an increased need for special care. This comes with its own set of difficulties. Specialised care often requires some form of payment, and thus I would have to struggle to pay my way within the health system. In addition, due to my disability I am also more prone to medical complications, meaning more treatment will be needed.
Despite applying to government organisations, claims for specialised care can take months or even years to be approved. During this period, I would be left to fend for myself, which is rather daunting.
The Solution of Professional Caretakers
As many will no doubt attest to, the common solution for people in my position is to hire a trustworthy caretaker. They are a sort of life saver for elderly people, as they are capable of giving them the love and attention they need in their later years, as well as providing medical assistance should any be needed.
Caretakers are costly, however, and so it is an expensive option. Yet, when it comes to taking care of the elderly, it is important to remember that nothing should be uncared for. To the elderly, a caretaker can provide emotional and physical wellbeing, and ultimately bring much joy and comfort to them.
With that said, it is important for elderly people to be prepared for any eventuality. For this reason, I believe that elderly people should have a plan in place on who will take care of them when they can no longer take care of themselves. Whether it be family, or professional caretakers it is important to think ahead to ensure that no unacceptable surprises are allowed to happen.
